May 20 – 26 is Small Business Week. If you’re a small business, download and print the Small Business poster to put in your window. Everyone else, go visit your favorite small business and thank them for supporting so many jobs or better yet, buy something.
Our 20th street fair is Saturday, July 28th. We’ll have a community parade, vendors, food, fun, kids activities, and an opportunity to check out what’s going on in the district.

How can anyone keep track of the changes pouring into our area? Don the Barber at 23rd and Division is gone. Another barber will start there soon. The Press Club at 26th and Clinton changed hands and is now run by Zachary J Gray. Jonathan LeGare’s small coffee shop on Clinton remains papered over and rumor says Dr Bailey, the next-door business, is trying to expand into that space.
The Clinton Street theatre has new owners and Lani Leigh will take over. There is space in 1235 SE Division for a small business. The current mix is dance, mental and physical services, home improvement, and catering. If you’re planning to dine at Bar Avignon or Neustra Cocina, please note that the parking lot at Bella Institute is now pay for service. More rumors about new apartments on the street. This time it’s 3360 SE Division, current home of Village Merchants and Tanqueria Lido. No confirmation yet, bit it will probably be commercial on the ground floor and apartments/condos above. Again, no parking is required. Work of some kind is beginning across the street. Barriers are up and the builder’s name is prominently displayed on a sign. Enerick Architects have their name in front of the concrete building at 1600 SE Division, across from St Philip. The new owners have applied for permits to “convert single family dwelling into a duplex, add second story, remodel, new elevator.” The long empty storefront next to Ace’s Quick Cash (was Modern Hippy)on Division is rumored to become an Asian restaurant. The wine store business that applied for a liquor license over a year ago never got started.
Compote on Clinton at 20th has applied for a beer and wine license so it can serve Mimosas with its fabulous weekend breakfasts.
The reconstruction of the curvy corner at 42nd and Division is postponed until school is out for the summer. The work on and around 11th should be done soon. The contract for the work on Division is going out to bid and work should start in late summer, after the street fair.
Speaking of the Street Fair, July 28th is our 20th annual fair and our theme this year is Meet Us at the Music. The application forms for sponsorship, parade entry, and vendor spaces are all available on our website, www.division/clinton.com.
