HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Our annual meeting is January 31, 2012 in St Philip Neri’s Carvlin Hall from 11:30 – 1:30. In keeping with tradition, we will have a great meal courtesy of our D/CBA restaurants, a silent auction, elections, and this year, a LOT of information about upcoming changes to our streets. Save the date and plan to attend.

Eugene Gray of Eugenios has added Freedom Yoga to his space at 3584 SE Division on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:45 to 8:30 am. Fees are on a sliding scale. Eugene teaches Lyengar, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and other disciplines. Call Eugene at 503.358.7848 for more information.

The Woodsman Market at 4529 SE Division is now open. Artist Annie Meyer at Studio 2507 on SE Clinton is rumored to have opened a new spot in the Pearl.

TOCICI began in 1995 as GW Computers, became GB Computers in 1998 and TOCICI (The Only Constant Is Change Itself) in 2008. TOCICI is a small, locally owned Internet business that designs and manages large international private networks. TOCICI is located just off 39th and Division.

In October, Maureen Maclise moved Belmont Yoga over to 5001 SE Brooklyn Studio D, and renamed it Portland Therapeutic Yoga.

Bartleby Bear’s Book Collective opening January 2012 at 3561 SE Division is sharing space with Rin Jackson. Rin has moved her studio but will continue to display her work at 3561. Replacing the Blue Pig at 5026 SE Division is Mi Mero Mole, offering tacos, burritos, quesadillas, guisados, and alcohol.

Rumor also says that the Road Runner Café will open soon at 3570 SE Division, the window wrapped space between Division Wines and Sovereign Tattoo.

Lyn Nance Sasser, the artist who created last year’s street fair poster, has been awarded a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council to produce a series of ten prints. The prints will feature images gathered through the city and will be on display in late 2012

Ex Libras Anonymous moved into 4185 SE Division. Ex Libris creates and sells journals made from recycled books. The covers and some pages are salvaged and the rest replaced with acid free paper, usable for journaling or sketching.

Artist Gila Lane plans to open Lane Gallery at 2627 SE Clinton in early January. Gila plans to feature other artists each month and to offer evening events: music, comedy, poetry, & salons. Bluebird Real Estate at 2615 SE Clinton is donating the proceeds from two sales to Richmond Place, the Portland Impact Program at 41st and Division. The Bluebird Gift sale on December 17th will donate 10% and the Bluebird Charity Bake Sale on December 18th will donate 100%. Stop by and know your money is going to a good cause. They are also collecting new and lightly used clothing and canned foods throughout the weekend. Bloomsbury Floral, in the front of Bluebird, will be offering small gifts and seasonal floral arrangements. Sub Rosa is open for Breakfast and lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Across the street from Sub Rosa, Living Room Realtors at 2625 SE 26th is still preparing the former warehouse for occupancy.

Early in 2012, Katie Poppe opens her fourth Little Big Burger at 3810 SE Division in the Move The House building. The website, www.littlebigburger.com, shows a simple, reasonably priced menu. We have a couple of boarded windows on Division, Primp beauty salon at 43rd and New Thai Blues restaurant at 41st. The latter looks like a car drove into the wall and took the window with it. The city has plans to straighten out that curve.

The restored store at 4912 SE Division posted a liquor application that states the business owner wants to sell wine and/or beer in containers, perhaps a wine shop or specialty beers? We’ll need to wait and see what happens. The Woodsman Market at 4525 SE Division has moved from brown paper on the windows to dark blue.

Dues statements are on their way. Please consider joining the D/CBA next year. Your dues will help support our efforts to keep Division and Clinton humming while the streets are torn up and resurfaced.

The best of the season to all of you and we look forward to seeing you at our annual meeting in January.

Eugenios has expanded into the former Fleur de Lis and now is 3584 and 3588. He’s offering more space and music. Toni Mikel moved Bluebird Real Estate into 2615 SE Clinton, replacing Green Noise. Lisa martin’s Bloomsberry Floral will move into Toni’s entryway. The City Outside, 2853 SE Division, is a landscape design firm specializing in smart, emotive designs for close in residential and boutique business clients. The Woodsman Tavern opened at 4537 SE Division. Going in to the former Artemis Café at 12th and Division is Double Dragon, who will be serve sandwiches and liquor. East Side Guitar Repair moved to Hawthorne, and Weird Bar has changed hands. Windows on both are papered, usually an indication that work is underway. Little Big Burger is coming soon to the Move The House building at 38th and Division.
Dining on Division/Clinton is changing for 2012. It will be five weeks long, January 15 to February 25, all dining cards with one or more stamps will be eligible for the gift certificate drawing, and a special bonus gift will go to the card with the most stamps. The cost remains the same. Participants must be D/CBA dues-paying members and contribute a gift certificate worth an average check. Contact mjeanbaker@peoplepc.com if you plan to participate this year. Sorry, no food carts.
Around Thanksgiving, preliminary work begins at 11th – 12th with lane closures and BES and utility work. Preliminary work on Division begins about the same time with measuring, marking, and drilling a series of core samples in the street, called pot holing. Construction is still scheduled to start in the spring.
Do give some thought to holiday lighting in your store windows, we can at least look cheerful.

Urban Development reports that their residential units at Move The Tree apartments on Division at 38th are 2/3 full. Peggy Jacobi’s new salon is on the ground floor, on the south end of the courtyard facing the flow through planter. The former Dow Columbia building at 3325 SE Division now has two storefront windows facing Division, no new tenants, but they’re working on it. For more information about the commercial spaces available, see their updated notice at www.divisionclinton.com/3525sedivision.pdf.
Guitar Crazy, 3319 SE Division has a new sign over its front door. Shanghai Company is open for business again at 28th and Division. Shanghai grows and packages bean sprouts for restaurants and groceries. Fieldwork Design recently moved into 2524 SE Division, the corner of 26th and Division. Fieldwork specializes in handmade commercial furniture using local sources and sustainable practices. The lumber comes from deconstructed barns, downed oak trees and old fences and the finishes are all made in Oregon. They plan to upgrade their space to have their design offices and a small conference room facing Division and their workshop in the back. Some of the pieces they have on display include chairs with hand woven seat covers, a planter made of blocks of wood trimmed from beams, a long, low coffee table of oak fence posts from Kentucky. The boards were stained with creosote to keep horses from nibbling on them. A good sanding and finish and the smell is removed. PAW is leaving the 30th and Division building. Nothing is known about plans for the future of the building.
Los Gorditos at 12th and Division added planter boxes to its former parking lot, creating smaller outdoor areas around picnic tables and benches. Rain or Shine Coffee at 60th and division has applied for a liquor license. The Genealogical Forum of Oregon, having moved from 15th and Gideon to the basement of the Ford Building at 11th and Division, holds its Grand Opening Ceremony on September 14th. The house at 14th and Division, which has been under renovation for years, is almost complete. It will open as Totem Lodge Wellness Center, a program of the Native American Rehabilitation Association of the Northwest.
Many thanks to all the businesses that promptly remove graffiti, which has picked up some as summer closes. Remember to take pictures and send them to Graffiti Coordinator Marcia Dennis at marcia.dennis@portlandoregon.gov.

Urban Development Partners is one week (August 1st) away from opening their new mixed-use building at 3810 Division and would like to welcome Peggy Jacobi, of New Horizons Hair Design back to the property. The tree that left during redevelopment is now in the center of the patio on Division, looking prefectly healthy. Thank you, UD+P for its care and restoration.
More new retail tenants are opening this summer. The building has 24 apartments, 15 of which are leased. If you are interested in retail or an apartment, please call Neeley at 503-406-2686. At 3113 Division, we welcome the opening of Wafu, a ramen and seafood restaurant, in August. Wafu joins Sunshine Tavern and Bula Kava House in the Reliable Building. For more information, please go to www.LiveUDP.com.
The former Dow Columbia building at 3325 SE Division is being redeveloped to offer five commercial spaces ranging from 863 to 5,1500 square feet. For more information see www.divisionclinton.com/3525sedivision.pdf.
The street continues to change. New are Rip City Remedies at 3325 SE Division and Glasswing Guesthouse at 28th and SE Franklin; coming soon are The Woodsman Tavern at 4537 SE Division and The Foundation at 4831 SE Division; changing address is Bearly Worn, downsizing three doors west to 4908 SE Division and Green Noise, moving from 26th and Clinton to 38th and Gladstone.
Tart has left 21st and Division, Artemis Café at 12th and Division closed although Artemis Catering in the same building is doing very well. Body Mechanics is settled into 2512 SE 35th Place across the street from Time Bomb Vintage. Jane Hinton is the new owner of the Flying Cat coffee house at 31st and Division. She plans to concentrate on coffee, pastries, and community space and has allowed the liquor license to lapse. Doctor of Optometry Christine Gebhardt’s new sign reads 60 di Vision at 5935 SE Division, next door to the new Rain or Shine coffee.
It was a pretty awesome street fair. Our sincere thanks to the many people who volunteered to deal with the barriers, the trash, the vendor areas, the porta-potties, and all the other not so shining details required to entertain a couple of thousand people. Next year, we celebrate our 20th fair over, around, and thru the scheduled reconstruction on Division Street. It’s bound to be interesting.
July News

July 23rd Mark your calendars and join us to celebrate Division Clinton’s 25th birthday, to check out bargains at the Richmond Neighborhood sale, and to enjoy the 19th annual street fair.
Latest news from the Division Screetscape project is that the work, once scheduled for January 2012, is now tentatively scheduled for March 2012. Before then, there will be at least two more community gatherings, one to comment on the 60% design and the last to comment on the 90% design. As always, stop by see what’s planned for your area.
In the calm before the construction, the businesses around the new Clinton Street light rail station are leaving, most for other areas of Portland. The Genealogical Forum of Oregon has chosen to move from 15th and Gideon to 11th and Division, in the basement of the Ford building. They will open sometime after the street fair.
The Division/Clinton website, www.divisionclinton.com has an entirely updated directory. Check it out and inform us if you should be there and aren’t, if you shouldn’t be there and are or the information is incorrect or outdated. info@divisionclinton.com or mjeanbaker@peoplepc.com will get a prompt correction.
Move-The-House apartments at 38th and Division are ready to accept residents. No word on possible businesses on the first floor. The large tree on the property, put in storage during construction, should be back on the premises.
The International Beauty School has become Bella Institute, School of Cosmetology. The former Modern Hippy has been rebuilt since the fire and looks close to accepting new tenants. It used to have a store on the ground floor and an apartment on the second.

This year’s street fair is going to be historic! Mayor Adams and entertainer Storm Large share the spotlight as Grand Marshals. Plans are coming together for Clinton and 26th. During the day the parade will end there, the Last Regiment will do a short program; there will be children’s events, food, music, and entertainment. MediaPDX is providing a hose and mister in their parking lot at 2612 SE Clinton. Gilly’s Salon is sponsoring kids activities, face painting, crafts, interactive music/art project and general mayhem. In the evening, when the kids are safely home, there will be a beer garden, music, dancing, food, and more entertainment (Hungry Ghost, Pynnacles, 82nd & Heartache are confirmed bands) organized by Gilly’s, Dots, and Savoy. More events are being planned on Division from 50th to the Ford Building on 11th. Have you planed your event for the fair? Remember, we will be knee deep in construction next year, let’s make this event remarkable as well as memorable.
Disaster restoration expert Dow Columbia is relocating to Wilsonville on June 30th after being on Division Street since the early 1960s and the building owners are exploring a possible re-development into a multi-tenant retail project. The 10,000 square foot building (with parking in the rear) is located 3525 SE Division Street. Josh Bean of Doug Bean & Associates, Inc., 503-222-5100 is marketing the building.
The Ford building at 11th and Division has been renovated and now houses 70 businesses, including the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, who are moving from 15th and Gideon, site of a future Milwaukie Light Rail station. Portions of Martin Eichinger’s building between 25th and 26th on Division are now for lease. Twill, at 21st and Division, celebrated its fifth birthday with an event that included Ether shoes, Taste Unique Italian restaurant and Tart yogurt.
Living Room Realtors is moving into 2625 SE 26th, the brick building across from Sub Rosa. They plan to hold an open house in the fall when the building is brought up to code and they are settled in.
On July 23rd plan to participate in the parade, dance to the music, check out the businesses, and join the celebrations. 25 years is a long time for a small nonprofit not only to survive, but also to provide service to its members and the neighborhood.
